Ericka Yadira Cruz Escalante from the Mexican state of Yucatán, represented her country in the Miss Universe 2002  She was also the first Afro-Mexican to represent Mexico in Miss Universe history.

Ericka Cruz is probably the less-known Mexican beauty queen of the decade. Her beauty was not your conventional Mexican beauty, as she possesses African heritage. This beauty from Yucatan won the title of Nuestra Belleza Mexico 2001, and would represent Mexico in Miss Universe 2002 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Ericka had a good-average performance, but failed to reach the Top 15 of Miss Universe 2002.

She rolled into politics, but currently she is a fashion designer and teaches modeling.
